Pet Protectors Video: Fleas: The Facts

PDSA vet, Elaine, tells us about fleas on our pets. She says that cats and dogs are often brought in to the surgery scratching and itching, but owners often say that the pet doesn’t have fleas. However, fleas move quickly and are not often seen. Elaine says that by looking through the pet’s coat, she doesn’t always find fleas but is often able to find flea dirt; this looks like small dark flecks in the coat. To check whether these flecks are flea dirt, she puts them on to a piece of clean white paper and adds a drop of water. If the water turns red, then she knows it is flea dirt because fleas drink blood and this colours their dirt red.
