Pet Protectors Video: Rabbit Diet

PDSA vet, Paul, speaks from his consulting room and speaks about the importance of giving pet rabbits the right food. He says that the golden rule is “hay, hay and more hay”. This is because a rabbit’s teeth grow continuously throughout the rabbit’s life, so they need to eat lots of hay every day to keep their teeth worn down. Freshly pulled grass is also good for rabbits, but not cut grass. He says that they need clean drinking water together with small amounts of fresh vegetables each day. Don’t give carrots too often as they are high in sugar, but the leafy carrot tops are good for them. Finally, Paul suggests visiting your vet for advice about feeding your rabbits and says that it is extremely important that any changes to their diet are made gradually, as otherwise it can upset their digestive system.
